About The Breed
The Tibetan Terrier is a mid sized shaggy dog, square in proportion, strong, and solid. The coat is long and double thick. It covers from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. The coat has no "doggy" odor and shedding is minimal. They come in a wide variety of colors including black, white, silver, red, cream, and gold, in any combination. They have flat snowshoe like feet unique to the breed. They have long heavy eyelashes that hold the thick hair out of their eyes and help to protect the eyes from snow blindness, a necessity for a native Tibetan where temperatures remain below zero for weeks.
The Tibetan can often be aloof with people they do not know, but love to participate fully within the family activities. They are intensely family oriented and usually form a close bond to one special person in the family. They are extremely intelligent, intensely curious and a true companion.
Legend of the Breed
According to legend, the Tibetan Terrier originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet over 2000 years ago. Raised in the Monasteries, they were never sold, but may have been gifted by someone who did a favor or good deed for the lamas. The association with the monasteries earned them the name "The Holy Dog of Tibet." They are also known as "the Good Luck Dog" or "Luck Bringer" as they were given to people going on dangerous journeys. The Travelers safety were ensured as no one would harm anyone fortunate enough to receive a Tibetan Terrier.
